FAQ Official

Will Subnautica 2 Be on PS4, PS5 or Switch?

Subnautica 2 launches on PC and Xbox Series X|S only at Early Access. Here is why PlayStation and Switch versions may take 2-3 years to arrive.

Will Subnautica 2 Be on PS4, PS5 or Switch?

With the upcoming release of Subnautica 2 in Early Access, many players are wondering if they can play the game on their PlayStation or Nintendo consoles.

Current Platform Availability

As of the Early Access launch on May 14, 2026, Subnautica 2 is strictly available on:

  • PC (Steam, Epic Games Store, Windows Store)
  • Xbox Series X|S (also via Game Pass Ultimate / PC Game Pass)

For full platform and pricing detail, see the release date page.

Will it come to PS4, PS5, or Nintendo Switch?

Currently, Subnautica 2 is not scheduled for release on PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, or Nintendo Switch.

Why is it not on PlayStation or Switch yet?

Developers usually prioritize PC and Xbox for Early Access titles. Xbox has a dedicated ‘Game Preview’ program, and PC platforms like Steam are perfectly built for Early Access. Sony and Nintendo historically have stricter policies regarding unfinished or Early Access games.

Is there hope for the future?

Yes. The original Subnautica and Subnautica: Below Zero were eventually released on both PlayStation and Nintendo consoles. Since Subnautica 2 is built on Unreal Engine 5, future ports are technically very feasible once the game reaches its full 1.0 release.

For now, PlayStation and Switch players will have to wait for the full release, which is estimated to be in 2-3 years based on developer statements — read how long Early Access will last for the timeline.

Subnautica Franchise Console History

Looking at how the previous games rolled out gives us the best signal for Subnautica 2’s likely console roadmap:

GamePC LaunchPS LaunchSwitch Launch
Subnautica (1)20182018 (PS4)2021
Subnautica: Below Zero20212021 (PS4 / PS5)2021
Subnautica 22026 (Early Access)TBA after 1.0TBA after 1.0

Notice that Subnautica 1 took 3 years to reach Switch after PC, while Below Zero shipped on Switch the same day as PS / Xbox because Unknown Worlds had already done the optimization work. Subnautica 2 on UE5 is a heavier engine — Switch in particular may be challenging on current hardware (a Switch 2 release is more plausible).

Why PC and Xbox First?

Three concrete reasons Unknown Worlds prioritized PC + Xbox for Early Access:

  1. Xbox Game Preview program is purpose-built for Early Access — Sony has no equivalent.
  2. Day-one Game Pass deal with Microsoft means a guaranteed audience and revenue floor that justifies launching with fewer platforms.
  3. Iteration velocity: console certification (especially on Sony platforms) adds 2–4 weeks per patch. Skipping that for the first 12 months keeps the patch cadence fast.

What Cloud Gaming Players Can Do

If you are on a platform without a native version but want to play now:

  • Xbox Cloud Gaming (xCloud) — works on iOS, Android, browsers, smart TVs. Requires Game Pass Ultimate. Subnautica 2 should be available day one via xCloud.
  • GeForce Now — Subnautica 1 and Below Zero are both on GeForce Now. Subnautica 2 support depends on Krafton’s licensing deal with Nvidia.
  • Steam Deck — full native support expected. The trailer’s UE5 visuals may push the Deck’s GPU, but Subnautica 1 ran fine on it.

FAQ

Will Subnautica 2 ever come to PS5? Almost certainly yes — but not at Early Access launch. Expect the PS5 announcement around the 1.0 full release, possibly 1-3 months later.

What about VR? No VR support announced. Subnautica 1 had unofficial-then-official VR; Unknown Worlds has not committed for Subnautica 2.

Is Subnautica 2 cross-progression? Cross-play is supported between PC and Xbox today. Cross-progression (cloud saves between platforms) is not yet confirmed.
